How to make Halal Teriyaki Sauce
It’s been quite difficult to find the recipe for a Halal teriyaki sauce. Eventually, I had to settle for a non alcoholic kids version that was posted on YouTube. I took note of the essential ingredients and made my own version of the sauce.
I’ve been using it for quite a while and it is mostly used to marinade my steak. It taste really sweet with a touch of tanginess from the vinegar. Mirin has been substituted with water that is densely filled with sugar. Sakae on the other hand is replaced by a simple concoction of 3 parts water with 1 part vinegar.
I like my teriyaki sauce with equal parts dark soy sauce, sugared water and diluted vinegar. I have since uploaded a video on YouTube to remind myself the basic ingredients and steps for me to refer to from time to time.
Ingredients and steps:
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup water
Mix and simmer slowly till the sugar dissolves - 1/2 cup dark soy sauce
- 1/4 cup vinegar
- 3/4 cup water
- 1/4 cup sugar – to be added at the end of the mixture
